If you’ve been down to The Walk @ JBR in the last week you may have had quite a surprise – it’s been completely taken over by some super cool street art as part of Dubai Canvas Festival, organsied by Brand Dubai. The Munchkins and I headed down there on Sunday as a bit of an impromptu Mother’s Day outing and ended up having such a fun time taking snaps with the optical illusions and 3D street art, dancing along to street musicians, watching thrilling trampolining displays by the Bounce guys and a spot of yummy dinner in a secret garden, it felt like we were on holiday! That wasn’t even the half of it though, we ran out of time to fully explore all the art works since they are spread out in the open air over such a large area, I definitely want to go back to see the bits we missed.
The Dubai Canvas Festival brings together local, regional and international artists and it is great to see so many different artistic styles on display. There were still some works being painted onto the walls when we visited and it was so interesting to see the process.
The Dubai Canvas Festival is free to visit and runs until March 14th, from 4pm to 10pm on weekdays and 10am to 11pm on weekends. There is quite a buzz in the air and a great arty vibe. There are apparently also a bunch of creative workshops on for different age groups as part of the festival. You can find more information, photos and videos about the event on the Brand Dubai Facebook page and the Dubai Canvas event page.
I would definitely recommend you get yourself down there before it finishes. The weather is perfect in the afternoons/evenings at the moment for a bit of a stroll and there is no shortage of restaurants and eateries, including cool food trucks, to make an evening out of it. It was starting to get busier later in the evening so with little kiddos I would probably try to go earlier rather than later. If you need an extra incentive, the organisers are running a photo competition, simply share your photos taken at the event on social media with the hashtag #DubaiCanvas for a chance to be in the running for prizes up to AED20,000!
Here are a few of our photos from our visit. The Munchkins displayed varying degrees of co-operation when it came to sitting or standing in the right spot and allowing me to take a picture from the right angle for the optical illusion to work. Thankfully there are helpful markings on the floor and pictures showing you what to do so you don’t have to decipher the anamorphic art yourself.
We posed with a leopard, surfed a waterfall, played with kittens, rode a whale, did a penguin photoshoot, rode horses, visited London’s Piccadilly Circus Station, sled down snow capped mountains, took a ride in a flying machine and much much more! I still want to see the giant giraffe and a few others that I have spotted in the media and on a friend’s social media page – a big thank you to her for giving me the heads up on this event. The festival is in its second year, I didn’t hear about it last year but I will definitely be looking out for it next year. I’m so loving all the art and culture that is coming to our city!
Let me know if you manage to get down there and which were your favourite pieces. Leave me a comment below, I would love to hear from you!
